Kurzportrait

Fabio Wasserfallen ist 1983 in Bern geboren und in der Aumatt in Hinterkappelen aufgewachsen. Er studierte Politikwissenschaft, Recht und Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Universität Bern und doktorierte 2014 am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Universität Zürich. Für seine Promotion forschte er ein Jahr am Weatherhead Centre of International Affairs der Harvard University. Nach seinem Doktorat wechselte er als Assistenzprofessor für Politische Ökonomie an das Centre of European Union Studies der Universität Salzburg, wo er 2017 habilitierte und zum assoziierten Professor befördert wurde. Im akademischen Jahr 2014/15 war er als Fung Global Fellow an der Princeton University. 2017/18 vertrat er den Lehrstuhl für Politische Theorie der Universität Zürich und 2019 wurde er auf den Lehrstuhl für Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft der Zeppelin Universität berufen. Seit 2020 ist Fabio Wasserfallen Professor für Europäische Politik an der Universität Bern und Direktor des Instituts für Politikwissenschaft. Das Frühlingssemester 2023 verbrachte er an der University of California, San Diego. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Europäische Integration, Institutionen und Entscheidungsprozesse der Europäischen Union, Politikdiffusion, die Beziehung zwischen der Schweiz und der EU, Föderalismus und direkte Demokratie. Die Resultate seiner Forschung wurden in führenden Zeitschriften veröffentlicht – unter anderem im American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science und European Political Science Review.

Willkommen beim Lehrstuhl für Europäische Politik

Der Lehrstuhl für Europäische Politik der Universität Bern beschäftigt sich in Forschung und Lehre mit der Entstehungsgeschichte der Europäischen Union, deren Institutionen, Entscheidungsprozessen und gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen. Dazu gehören insbesondere auch die Analyse der öffentlichen Meinung zu Themen der Europäischen Integration sowie das Studium der politischen Konflikte zwischen den Mitgliedsstaaten und zwischen den Institutionen der Europäischen Union. Zu den Forschungsschwerpunkten von Fabio Wasserfallen zählen zudem die Bereiche Politikdiffusion, Föderalismus und direkte Demokratie.

Die Vorlesungen Europäische Union I und II behandeln die Entstehungsgeschichte der Europäischen Union, deren Institutionen und Entscheidungsprozesse, sowie einzelne Politikfelder und gegenwärtige Herausforderungen. Darauf aufbauend werden weitere Themen der Europäischen Politik in Seminaren vertieft.

Die Forschungsschwerpunkte des Lehrstuhls liegen in den Bereichen Europäische Integration, Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion, Institutionen und Entscheidungsprozesse der Europäischen Union, Politikdiffusion, Föderalismus und direkte Demokratie. Von 2015 bis 2019 leitete Fabio Wasserfallen zusammen mit Sonja Puntscher Riekmann das von der Europäischen Union finanzierte Horizon 2020 Projekt “EMU Choices”, welches die politischen Konflikte in der Eurokrise untersucht.
